AHSAA super regional volleyball tournaments are set after area play concluded on Thursday.

Super regional tournaments begin on Wednesday at two sites with 208 teams competing for 56 spots in the state championship tournament.

The South Super Regional will be played at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl Multiplex while North Super Regional action is at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center. There are 104 teams at each site competing in single elimination play in seven classes.

The top four teams from each class at both sites advance to the state championship tournament beginning on Oct. 31 at the Birmingham Crossplex with state championship matches played at the adjacent Bill Harris Arena.

Class 6A-1A areas 1-8 along with Class 7A areas 1-4 play in Montgomery while 6A-1A areas 9-16 and Class 7A areas 5-8 play in Huntsville.

Predetermined area winners play area runnerups in all first round matches.

In Class 6A-1A, which has 16 teams per class in each regional, teams must win their first two matches to earn a spot in the state championship tournament. Teams from Class 7A, with only eight teams in each regional, need only win their first round match to assure a spot in next week’s championships.

The final two rounds of play, comprised of semifinal winners and losers in each class, determines seeding for the state championship with a regional title match and consolation match.

Six of seven defending champions are in the field with Class 7A McGill-Tollen, Class 6A Bayside Academy, Class 4A Montgomery Catholic, Class 3A Prattville Christian, Class 2A Donoho and Class 1A Addison. Class 5A Westminster Christian failed to earn a spot.
