AHSAA track: Madison Academy rallies to earn state title

Madison Academy rallied late Saturday afternoon to storm past W.S. Neal High School to claim the Mustangs’ second AHSAA state boys’ track championship in a row as the 100th AHSAA State Outdoor Track Championships came to a close for Classes 1A, 2A, and 3A at Cullman High School’s Oliver Woodard Stadium.

W.S. Neal of Brewton had a strong showing over both days and had 78 points heading into the final event of the meet – the Class 3A boys’ 4×400-meter relay. The Blue Eagles led 76-69 with the relay and two field events remaining.

Madison Academy won the 4×400 relay to pick up 10 points with W.S. Neal finishing third for 6. Coach Shannon Dorsey’s Mustangs made the most of the 3A boys’ shot put competition with Reese Baker finishing second with a throw of 47 feet, 5½ inches. Straughn’s Avery Smith won the competition at 49-8½. However, Khomoni Merrill and Austin Chambers finished fourth and fifth for Madison Academy as the team picked up 14 points.

Added with the relay win, Dorsey’s team made up 24 points in a matter of minute and finished with 96 total points to win the title. W.S. Neal finished second with 84 points. Weaver was third with 55 and Hillcrest-Evergreen had 50.5 points for fourth place.

Cold Springs’ boys won their second straight Class 2A boys’ state crown and fourth since 2016 with 90.5 points. Bayshore Christian was fourth with 59. Hunter Millard’s Winterboro squad scored 103 points to win the Class 1A boys’ state title for the first time.

Pike County High School junior Kaylin Jackson comes out of the blocks from lane 4 on her way to a win in the Class 3A girls’ 100-meter dash finals in the AHSAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 4, 2024, in Cullman. (AHSAA)AHSAA

Winning girls’ state titles were Marion County in Class 1A, Whitesburg Christian in 2A and Altamont in Class 3A. Susan Seals’ Red Raiders won for the second year in a row, amassing 84 points. Marengo was second with 55, Winterboro had 54 and Athens Bible had 41.

Mark Marshall’s Whitesburg team had 124 points in 2A, followed by Francis Marion with 44, Hatton with 39 and Cold Springs and Decatur Heritage with 35 each. It was Whitesburg’s first state girls’ outdoor state crown since winning four back-to-back in Class 1A from 2015-2018.

John Rediker’s Altamont squad edged Houston Academy with 85 points to win its sixth state title since 2015 – and its first in Class 3A. The Raiders had 80 points, Westminster of Oak Mountain 60 and Fayette County totaled 53.

Cold Springs won its state title thanks in large part to senior Ethan Edgewood, who won the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and ran the final leg on his team’s 4×800-meter relay team which also won a state title, to account for 32.5 points himself.

The Class 2A boys’ 4×100-meter relay finals turned out to be one of the most exciting of the day. Reeltown, featuring senior Arthur Woods, and Goshen, featuring Jamauri McClure, came down to the wire with Reeltown nipping the Eagles in a photo finish, clocking 43.14 seconds. Goshen’s official time was 43.15 seconds. W.S. Neal won the Class 3A 4×100 relay title with the best time overall at Cullman, 43.20 seconds.

McClure and Woods would meet again the Class 2A 100-meter dash finals. McClure won at 10.65 and Woods finished second at 10.92 seconds.

Following their Class 2A finals, Holly Pond’s Daniel Figurero captured the crowd’s attention with a 14.96 finish in the ambulatory 100 finals. Running with a special prothesis that replaced a leg that had been amputated, he raced the distance by himself.

Anna Pierce of Whitesburg Christian sparked her team to the Class 2A state title by winning the 3,200-meter run in 11:30.90. Teammate Lucy McGee was second almost a minute behind at 12:25.66 as their team picked up 18 points in that event.
