AHSAA track: Check out the leaders in big-school state meet

Defending state champions Hoover High School and Scottsboro stretched their big leads Friday as the 100th AHSAA State Outdoor Track and Field Championships closed Day 2 at the Gulf Shores Sports Complex.

Action concludes Saturday in Class 4A, 5A, 6A and 7A. The state meet is being live-streamed over the NFHS Network’s subscriber-based platform.

Hoover holds a commanding lead over James Clemens, 92.5 points to 44 in Class 7A boys’ action heading into Saturday’s final day of competition. Scottsboro has 95 points in Class 5A boys’ competition with John Carroll a distant second with 41 points and Carroll of Ozark 31.

Northridge’s boys hold a slim five-point lead over UMS-Wright in Class 6A with 44.5 points to the Bulldogs’ 39.75. Cullman is third with 29 and Homewood is fourth with 28.25. In Class 4A boys’ competition, defending state champion Brooks has 50 points with Hamilton second with 41 and American Christian third with 35.

In the girls’ division, the 7A race for the title has three teams within striking distance, with Hewitt-Trussville leading after Friday’s competition with 52 points, followed by Hoover with 41.5 and Vestavia Hills with 27.5.  Defending 6A state champion Mountain Brook has a strong 66-27 lead over St. Paul’s Episcopal and Homewood. Scottsboro leads in the Class 5A girls’ competition with 61 points. Beauregard is second at 46.5 and Arab is third with 41.5. Bayside Academy has 62 points to lead Class 4A, with Brooks second with 41 and Montgomery Academy in third place with 31.

Hewitt-Trussville’s girls’ 4×800-meter relay team set a new state record with a winning time of 9:13.75 – erasing the record set last year by Vestavia Hills. Chelsea was a close second Friday clocking 9:17.85. James Clemens’ boys also set a new 4×800 relay record in Class 7 winning the event with a time of 7:41.07.

The brother and sister combination of Jordan and Alivia Urrutia continued to dominate in the sprint events for Bob Jones High School. Alivia Urrutia, a junior, won the Class 4A 400-meter dash with a time of 56.47 seconds. Her brother, Jordan, a senior, also won the boys’ 400-meter dash with a time of 47.96 seconds. Both times were the best of the day in all four classes.

Jordan Urrutia clocked 21.65 seconds in the 200-meter dash prelims to qualify second behind Hoover’s Jordan Woolen, who had the top boys’ time at 21.61 seconds. His sister had the fifth-best time in the girls’ 200 prelim behind the leader Zaria Parker, a junior at arch-rival James Clemens, who clocked 24.63 seconds for the best time of the day for the girls.

Among the top performances in each class Friday:

BOYS

BRADLEY FRANKLIN, THOMPSON: Had the top qualifying time in the 110-meter hurdles in Class 7A with a 13.47 finish.

WILLIAM NUMNUM, NORTHRIDGE: Cleared 15 feet to win the Class 6A boys’ pole vault.

ARTHUR LANGLEY, JOHN CARROLL CATHOLIC: Clocked 9:24.80 to win the Class 5A race in the 3,200-meter competition.

DAKOTA FRANK, MUNFORD: The senior won the 3,200-meter race in Class 4A with a 9:33.69 finish.

ADAM BYERS, CULLMAN: Won the Class 6A javelin event by 25 feet over his closest competitor with a winning throw of 190 feet, 10 inches.

JAMARIAN ACKLIN, DESHLER: Captured the Class 4A shot put with a winning toss of 51-01.

TALEN SMITH, MOODY: Won the ambulatory 400-meter dash event in Class 4A with a time of 1:03.27.

ALEX JOHNSON, CHEROKEE COUNTY: Had the best qualifying time in the Class 4A 200-meter dash prelims with a 21.75 time.

MALCOLM SIMMONS, BENJAMIN RUSSELL: After winning the Class 6A  high jump Thursday with a 6-10 ½ leap, he clocked a personal best time of 21.63 seconds in the 6A 200-meter prelims for the top time in his class.

GIRLS

JANIE FORD, ST. PAUL’S: Had the top qualifying time in the Class 6A 100-meter hurdles prelims with a 14.50 effort. She also won the long jump competition Friday with a personal best of 19 feet, 5½ inches.

EMMA BEOOK LEVERING, HOMEWOOD: The senior edged Mountain Brook senior Mary Grace Malone to win the 3,200-meter race in Class 6A with a winning time of 10:57.803. Malone finished second with as photo finish time of 10:57.806.

CAROLINE SANDERS, ARAB: Continued her domination in the 200-meter dash with a Class 5A prelim-leading time of 24.78 seconds to win her heat and the top lane in Saturday’s finals.

MARY HAYES JOHNSON, CHEROKEE COUNTY: Landed the top prelim qualifying time in the Class 4A 200-meter dash finals with a 24.78 effort. She also won the 400-meter dash clocking 56.58 seconds.

KATIE MAE COAN, LAWRENCE COUNTY: Won the Class 5A 3,200-meter run with a winning time of 11:04.14.
