UMS-Wright won the Class 4A/5A girls tennis title on Friday despite the fact that the tournament won’t conclude until Saturday due to the long delay on Thursday’s opening day of the Alabama High School Athletic Association State Tennis Championships.

UMS-Wright clinched the crown – its 16th – with 76 points and Donoho finished second with 43 at Mobile’s Tennis Center.

Play will resume Saturday at 8 a.m. with five singles finals to be played in the boys’ competition and four singles and one doubles final on the girls’ side.

LAMP of Montgomery holds a 60-53 lead over Houston Academy and Jasper is in third place with 40 points.

UMS-Wright advanced five players into the singles finals along with all three doubles teams. The Bulldogs’ No. 1 team of Sarah Ladd and Carol Murray, beat Russellville’s Peyton Parrish and Sofia Tiffin 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the team championship.

On the boys’ side, LAMP’s team of Edward Lee and Ian Shinn beat Houston Academy’s Mitchell Piedra and Brody Williams 7-5, 7-5 to claim the state No.1 doubles title for 4A/5A.

Set to battle in the girls’ No. 1 singles finals Saturday are Caroline Johnson of Sardis and UMS-Wright’s Ladd. The boys’ No. 1 finalists are LAMP’s Lee and Houston Academy’s Piedra.
