AHSAA tennis: See the Day 1 leaders in 1A/3A, 6A state tournaments

The AHSAA 2023 tennis state tournament got underway on Monday at the Mobile Tennis Center with teams competing for the Class 1A/3A and Class 6A titles. Those championships will be decided on Tuesday with the battle for Class 4A/5A and 7A titles to take place Thursday and Friday.

Lauderdale County piled up 38 points to take the Day 1 lead in 1A/3A girls’ play, 10 points better than St. James. Providence Christian is in third place with 21. The Tigers also had four players advance to the singles finals and all three doubles teams will be in the finals.

In Class 6A girls’ play, Decatur and Mountain Brook deadlocked with 42 points apiece in Day 1 play. St. Paul’s is in third place with 29 points and Northridge has 26. A total of 13 schools scored points on Monday.

In the Class 6A boys’ state tourney, Homewood holds a 38-37 advantage over Mountain Brook. Trinity is in third place with 28 points and Spanish Fort has 23.

The 6A boys and girls have several matches remaining to be played on Tuesday to determine the finals’ matchups to be played late Tuesday afternoon.

In 1A/3A boys’ action, St. James holds a comfortable 24-point lead over Indian Springs and ASCTE, the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering. St. James has 42 points – and advanced all six singles players and all three doubles teams to Tuesday’s finals. Indian Springs and ASCTE have 18 points after Day 1, followed by Covenant Christian with 17 and Providence Christian with 16.
