AHSAA tennis: Rain pushes Class 4A/5A, 7A tourneys behind

A six-hour rain delay pushed the Class 4A/5A and Class 7A AHSAA State Tennis Championships behind schedule on Thursday at the Mobile Tennis Center. Matches scheduled for the morning didn’t get underway until after 2 p.m.

Matches were still going on at 9:30 Thursday night with play still in the second and third rounds for both divisions. Plans were to finish all Thursday matches and still complete the tournament on Friday.

Defending boys 7A champion Vestavia Hills held a 13-12 lead over Bob Jones headed into the final round of matches on Thursday. Auburn and Montgomery Academy, which moved up to 7A this season, have 8 points each. Florence, also playing its first state tournament, has 6 points and Fairhope has 3.

Auburn’s girls hold the early lead with 18 points in Class 7A, followed by Montgomery Academy (11) and defending champion Vestavia Hills (10) with several matches still to be completed. Fairhope had 9 points followed by Spain Park and Huntsville with 6 each. Hoover has 4 points and James Clemens has 3.

In Class 4A/5A girls play, 13 schools earned at least 4 points in the early rounds with UMS-Wright on top with 21 points. Donoho had 18, followed by Houston Academy (14), Russellville (13), Jasper (12) and Leeds (11).

LAMP of Montgomery and Russellville were tied with 12 points each in the Class 4A/5A boys play. T.R. Miller and Houston Academy, winner of the 1A/3A title in 2022, were tied with 9 points each. Five schools – Boaz, Guntersville, Jasper, Sylacauga and Deshler – had 6 points each.
