AHSAA tennis: LAMP wins first state tennis championship

LAMP of Montgomery captured the AHSAA Class 4A/5A Boys State Tennis Championship on Saturday at the Mobile Tennis Center, the first state title for the Golden Tigers.

LAMP, the Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School, is coached by Jordan Berry. The Golden Tigers won five singles matches and two doubles titles to finish with 70 points in the event. Houston Academy was second with 55 points, followed by Jasper (40) and Russellville (30).

UMS-Wright, coached by Meridy Jones, wrapped up the girls 4A/5A title on Friday. The Bulldogs finished with 83 points ahead of Donoho, which had also clinched second place on Friday. The title was UMS-Wright’s 17th overall and first since 2019.

Rain on Thursday upended the regularly scheduled two-day tournament and forced the 4A/5A division into Saturday.

Edward Lee, LAMP’s only senior, won the No. 1 singles title with a 1-6, 7-5, 11-9 victory over 2021 1A/3A state champ Mitchell Piedra of Houston Academy. Lee and junior Ian Shin won the No. 1 doubles finals over Piedra and Brody Williams, 7-5, 7-5.

The UMS-Wright girls advanced five players into the singles finals and had all three double teams reach the championship. The Bulldogs’ No. 1 team of Sarah Ladd and Carol Murray beat Russellville’s Peyton Parrish and Sofia Tiffin 6-2, 6-1 to win the title. Ladd also beat Caroline Johnson of Sardis in the No. 1 singles finals 6-2, 6-0.

UMS won the only doubles match remaining Saturday morning with  Emmy Eckert and Ann Dyas Thompson claiming a tough No. 3 doubles final over LAMP’s Dabeen Choi and Hannah Baik 6-2, 5-7, 10-4.
