AHSAA tennis: Auburn, Vestavia Hills win 7A state titles

The Auburn High School girls tennis team won its second Class 7A title in the past three years and the Vestavia Hills High School boys won their eighth crown in Friday action in the Alabama High School Athletic Association State Tennis Championships at the Mobile Tennis Center.

The Class 7A championships were decided in the early evening following a day of playing catch-up due to a long rain delay in Thursday’s first day of the scheduled two-day event. The Class 4A/5A championships – featuring a field almost twice the size of the 7A division – are still underway.

Coach Hollis Davis’ Auburn team finished with 59 points and defending champion Vestavia Hills finished a distant second with 31 points. Montgomery Academy, competing in Class 7A for the first time, finished third with 26 points.

Montgomery Academy senior Gabby Barrera won the No. 1 singles championship by beating defending state champion Claire Bosman of Auburn 6-3, 6-0 in the finals.

Bosman and her freshman sister Camilla Bosman, who won the No. 2 singles championship Friday, combined to beat Barrera and Jenna Chandler of the Eagles in the No. 1 doubles finals 6-3, 6-3.

Auburn’s Victoria Choo and Shreya Ejantkar captured individual singles titles at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively.

Davis’s No. 3 doubles team, Sophie Smith and Hanbi Youn, beat Vestavia Hills’ Caroline Helms and Wynn Strubel in the championship match 6-3, 7-5.

The Vestavia Hills boys finished with 51 points as coach Oliver Aaron’s team won five of six singles titles and one doubles championship.

Bob Jones High School, which swept the No. 1 singles and doubles championships, was second with 26 points. Auburn was third with 18 and Florence, in the 7A state tourney for the first time, finished fourth with 15.

Bob Jones junior Parker Free captured the No. 1 singles title with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hoover’s Samuel Sellers in the finals. It was his second straight state championship.

Free teamed with fellow junior Jonah Moro to win the No. 1 doubles championship Friday beating Vestavia Hills’ duo Kade Nelson and John Michael Yanosky 6-3, 6-1 in the finals.

Yanosky and Nelson, the only seniors in the Rebels’ lineup, won the No. 3 singles and No. 4 singles championships. Teammates Luke Bedwell, Brayden Helms and Andrew Pipkin also took the No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles championships, respectively.

Vestavia Hills finished the regular season 16-1 in duals competition with the only loss coming to Class 6A state champion Mountain Brook in February.

The Rebels also won the 7A state title in 2019 – giving Vestavia three championships in Class 7A and five in Class 6A. The three titles in 7A tie for the most in that division with Mountain Brook, which won three before dropping to 6A.

Spanish Fort’s Goodwin Holley wins 6A singles title

The Class 6A boys’ state tennis tournament concluded at Mobile Tennis Center Tuesday with the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches still waiting to crown individual champions due match limitations.

The matches were played Friday afternoon at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park Tennis Center before a good crowd with Mountain Brook’s Luke Schwefler and Max Gayden beating Trinity Presbyterian’s brother combination James and Samuel Treadwell in a thrilling 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 match.

Schwefler then met Spanish Fort’s Goodwin Holley in the No. 1 singles championship match 45 minutes later with Holley claiming the title 6-1, 6-1.
