AHSAA swimming: Huntsville boys win 8th straight title

Huntsville High School’s boys’ team posted 348 points to capture the school’s eighth consecutive AHSAA Class 6A/7A State Swimming Championship and a record 19th overall as the 64th state swimming meet concluded Saturday at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center on the Auburn University campus.

Coach Arthur Fortin’s Panthers topped runner-up Vestavia Hills (252) by 96 points, thanks to several record-setting performances – including new marks in the 200-yard medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay. Luke Bedsole and Bradford Johnson also set new 6A/7A records in the 50-yard freestyle race, 100 freestyle race and the 100 butterfly.

Boaz, coached by Dustin Thomas, won its third state boys’ title and second in a row with 235 points in Class 1A/5A. Gulf Shores was second with 214 points.

On the girls’ side, coach Wade Thaxton’s Bob Jones squad bested second-place Auburn 298-248.5 to claim the Patriots’ second Class 6A/7A championship in a row. Whitesburg Christian, coached by Joachim Thoenes, won its first girls’ state championship posting 272 points to edge defending state champion UMS-Wright with 264 points.

Here are the state records that were set in Saturday’s finals:

– 6A/7A BOYS’ 200 MEDLEY RELAY: Huntsville’s relay set a record for the second straight year with a time of 1:29.71. The team included junior Luke Bedsole, senior Cole Winslow, senior Bradford Johnson and junior J.P. Pace.

– 6A/7A BOYS’ 200 FREESTYLE RELAY: Huntsville’s domination in the boys’ relay competition continued in the 200 freestyle as seniors Bradford Johnson and Cole Winslow teamed with sophomore Wesley Johnson and junior J.P. Pace to establish a new 6A/7A record to win the race in 1:24.97.

– 6A/7A BOYS’ 400 FREESTYLE RELAY: Huntsville’s 400 freestyle relay team featuring Bradford Johnson, Wesley Johnson, Justin Freeman and Luke Bedsole won the final relay race with a class record 3:05.31 finish.

– 6A/7A BOYS’ 50 FREESYLE: Huntsville’s Luke Bedsole, a junior, swam the race in 20.16 seconds to establish a new AHSAA record in the event. James Clemens senior Cade McComb was a close second clocking 20.36. seconds. Bedsole also won the 100 freestyle in 44.28 seconds.

– 6A/7A BOYS’ 100 BUTTERFLY: Huntsville senior Bradford Johnson took first place with a record 47.51 time. Vestavia Hills junior Ari Azrad was a close second with a 50.15 finish.

– 1A/5A BOYS’ 400 FREESTYLE RELAY: LAMP High School of Montgomery’s relay team – senior Alex Jeong, eighth-grader David Graham, senior Paul Choi and junior Alex Park – set a new class record with a time of 3:22.16 – 17 seconds faster than their prelim time.

– 1A/5A BOYS’ 200 IM: LAMP junior Alex Park captured the gold with a record-setting 1:53.23 finish in the finals – beating his prelim time by 30/100ths of a second. He won the race by 10 seconds over his nearest competitor.

– 1A/5A BOYS’ 50 FREESTYLE: Whitesburg Christian senior Will Neville edged runner-up Kai Gregory, a senior from Satsuma, in the finals with a new record 21.10. Gregory clocked 21.89 seconds.

– 1A/5A BOYS’ 100 FREESTYLE: Whitesburg Christian’s Will Neville also won the 100 freestyle setting a class record with a time of 46.17 seconds. The senior edged Northside senior Josiah Blankenship, who finished in 47.20.

– 6A/7A GIRLS’ 200 MEDLEY RELAY: Freshman Abby Chan, junior Finnley Koehler, senior Samantha Chan and sophomore Meli Mbuko won the championship with a new record of 1:44.68 in the finals.
