AHSAA soccer roundup: St. James rolls past Tuscaloosa Academy
The top-ranked Class 1A/3A St. James girls rolled past No. 7 Tuscaloosa Academy 9-0 on Friday to advance to the AHSAA state playoffs final four next week in Huntsville.
The 15-1-1 Trojans got 5 goals from Katie Brightwell in the home quarterfinal win. She also had 2 assists for St. James.
Brightwell opened the scoring just minutes into the game off an assist from Natalie Barton.
Barton, Molly Phillips, Mary Grace Hixon and Hope McCain also had goals in the win.
“I am just so proud of how hard these girls competed for each other tonight,” St. James coach Charlie Brightwell said. “They came out focused and capitalized on the early chances, recording 3 goals in 15 minutes.
“Our defense and midfield really set the tone throughout the game, pressing all over the field and setting up our transition to offense as well as recording our 12th shutout in 17 games this season.”
Hixon finished with 3 assists on the night with McCain and Elliette Barton also getting an assist each.
Tuscaloosa Academy finished at 11-6-2 on the season.
St. James will meet St. Luke’s in the state semifinals on Wednesday.

St. Michael 4, Orange Beach 1
Tatum Hoffman scored a pair of goals as second-ranked St. Michael eliminated No. 4 Orange Beach in the AHSAA quarterfinals on Friday.
Maddie Key and Victoria Stopa scored a goal each for the Cardinals.
Westminster 2, Mars Hill 1
On Thursday, top-ranked Westminster Christian punched its ticket to the final four with the win over No. 8 Mars Hill.
The Wildcats (15-2-1) dominated the game, outshooting the Panthers 36-2 and getting goals from AnnaLi Weekley in the 36th minute and Jasmine Feld in the 72nd minute.
The Westminster defense notched 36 total recoveries, led by Elizabeth Riley with 10. Keeper Piper Blazier faced 2 shots and had 1 save.
Weekley’s goal came on a strike left of the box past a defender and the Panther keeper after a Feld shot was blocked.
Mars Hill (13-7) scored in the 42nd minute on a 25-yard free shot by Evan Ann Bowling.
With 7:49 left in the game, Feld took a free kick from 35 yards out before the Panthers defense or the keeper could adjust and drove the ball over the defenders’ heads and into the right corner of the net.
Westminster will meet Jacksonville or Westbrook Christian on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the state semifinals.
