AHSAA Hall of Famer changes mind on football job

AHSAA Hall of Famer Stacy Luker will not be the head football coach at Cottage Hill Christian after all.

The six-time state champion was introduced as the Warriors’ next coach last month but has decided not to accept the job. Head of school Chris Brazell confirmed the news to AL.com on Wednesday afternoon.

“It floored me,” Brazell said. “He was coming down, did inventory, order spirit packs, was back-and-forth between here and his house. Last week, he came to talk to me and said nothing out of the ordinary had happened. He just said, ‘Coach, I should be more excited than I am. I’m not that excited. I don’t even know if I want to be a head coach right now.”

Brazell did not immediately announce what might be next for Cottage Hill. He is scheduled to meet with the team Thursday.

It marks the second time this week that a coach has had a change of heart. Brian Seymore decided not to take the job at Greenville High School one week after he was approved as the head coach there.

Luker, 58, was to replace another veteran, Bobby Parrish, at Cottage Hill. Luker stepped down after six years as head coach at Clarke County in January. He led that team to the 2021 Class 2A state title.

Luker has been head coach at six previous schools, but he built his championship reputation at Sweet Water. He spent 12 years as the Bulldogs head coach, winning state titles in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. Along with Sweet Water, Clarke County and Neshoba Central, his other head coaching stops were at Washington County (1995-1996), Thomasville (1997-2001) and Demopolis (2015-2016).

The 2022 Alabama High School Hall of Fame inductee has a 238-107 overall record.
