Stanhope Elmore’s Josiah Gilbert fired a 6-under par 66 on Tuesday to turn in the top round of the day as the AHSAA Sub-State golf playoffs continued across the state. Gilbert earned an individual spot during the Class 6A, South 5 Sub-State tournament played at Prattville’s RTJ Legislator Course.

The top two teams in each sub-state event along with the top two individual finishers not on one of those teams earned spots in the AHSAA State Golf Championships set for May 15-16 at Auburn’s RTJ Grand National Course.

UMS-Wright won the team title with a 2-over par 290 round and Northridge’s 7-over 295 round earned the Jaguars the second team spot.

Trace Bracknell led Northridge with a 5-under 67 – just missing low medalist honors behind Gilbert. UMS-Wright’s Ken Brown carded a 2-under 70 for the winning Bulldogs, and Spanish Fort’s Jackson Spybey closed with a 1-under 71 to snag the other individual qualifier berth.

Sawyer Edwards also shot a 6-under 66 to earn low medalist honors at the Class 4A, North 3 boys’ Sub-State tourney at Silver Lakes Golf Course I Glencoe to help White Plains earn the No. 2 berth in the state tourney. The Wildcats had a 303 total. Haleyville won the sub-state championship with a 1-over 289 team score. Griffin Kimbrell and Hudson Lawson fired 2-under 70 rounds for the winning Lions, and Jake Temple had a 1-over 73.

Enterprise’s Gibson Charlton fired a 3-under 69 to lead the Wildcats to a one-stroke win over Auburn in the Class 6A, South 6 Sub-State Tourney at Azalea City Golf Couse in Mobile on Tuesday. The Wildcats had a 9-over 297 total to edge runner-up Auburn (298). Both teams advanced to next week’s AHSAA State Golf Championships.

Charlton sub-par round nipped Fairhope’s Tripp Duke by one stroke. Duke’s 70 earned him an individual berth in the state tourney  along with Pirates teammate Brody Quattlebaum, who finished third with an even par 72.

The top six golfers in the Class 6A, North 5 Sub-State tourney at Athens’ Canebreak Golf Course shot 70 or better with Hartselle’s Tristan Wisener and Mountain Brook’s Thomas Norris finishing with identical 4-under rounds of 68. The Spartans won the team title with a 1-over 289 and Cullman was second at 4-over 292.

Wisener earned one of the two individual qualifying spots and Homewood’s Jonathan Peters fired a 3-under 69 for the other individual slot.  Three golfers, Will Drake and Ben Shedd of Cullman and Mountain Brook’s Christopher Yielding, all finished a 2-under 70.

Highlighting girls’ play Tuesday was a 2-under 70 by UMS-Wright’s Frances Brown at the Class 6A, South 4 Sub-State tourney held at Azalea City Golf Course in Mobile. The Lady Bulldogs won the top team spot with a 237 and Auburn was second at 239.

Hartselle’s Jinger Heath had a 4-under 68, and Adalyn Pike of Athens fires 2-under 70 to earn the  two individual state tourney berths in the Class 6A, North 3 girls’ Sub-State tourney at Canebreak Course in Athens. Cullman (236) and Mountain Brook (283) landed 1-2 to take the two team qualifying berths.

Trinity’s Virginia Anne Holmes posted a 6-under 66 on Monday to lead The Wildcats to the Class 4A/5A South Sub-State title at Lagoon Park. Trinity shot a 239 team score and runner-up Northside was 13 shots back at 252.
