AHSAA golf: Homewood, UMS-Wright golfers take early lead

Homewood High School freshman Jack Lowery fired an 8-under 64 Monday at the AHSAA State Golf Championships being held at Florence’s Shoals RTJ Golf Course to lead the boys’ overall competition. UMS-Wright senior Frances Brown completed the 18 holes with a 7-under 65 to top the girls’ first-day competition.

Lowrey holds the lead headed into the final day of the 36-hole championships with a 1-shot lead over Cullman’s Ben Shedd, who is playing as an individual qualifier. Lowery helped the Patriots finish 6-under for the day with a team total 282 score. Homewood has a 7-stroke lead over UMS-Wright, which shot a team 289 in the Class 6A competition. Mountain Brook is third at 295 and Northridge is fourth with a 298 total.

UMS-Wright’s Thomas Crane finished at 3-under 69 and Ryan Pugh of Mountain Brook and Jonathan Peters of Homewood were both tied with rounds of 2-under 70.

In Class 7A, Enterprise’s Jon Ed Steed and Vestavia Hills’ Pierce Beck each came in at 3-under 69. Fairhope’s Miles Miller and Trip Duke were a stroke back at 2-under 70. Spain Park led after Day 1 with a 9-over 297 team total. Vestavia Hills was second at 299.

In Class 5A, Randolph holds a 2-stroke lead over Demopolis and West Point after finishing 35-over 323. In Class 4A, Haleyville posted a team 290 score – just 2 strokes over par – and holds a 12-stroke lead over Jackson heading into Tuesday’s play.

Westbrook Christian leads in Class 3A with a 308 total – 7 strokes ahead of current runner-up Northside Methodist (315). And in Class 1A/2A, Elba and North Sand Mountain are tied at 314.

Elba’s Jay Wilson fired a 3-under 69 and leads the 1A/2A individual competition by 3 shots over Bayshore Christian’s Michael Heaton, who had an even-par 72. In Class 3A, Northside Methodist’s Mason Crowder also shot a 3-under 69 and holds a 5-stroke lead over Westbrook Christian’s J.D. Berndt.

Haleyville’s Tyden Steele and Jackson’s Jack Doggett are currently tied for the lead with each carding a 1-over 73 Monday. Kole Farris of Haleyville and Luke Ferguson of Bayside Academy are a shot back at 74. Ferguson earned MVP honors in the Class 4A state boys’ soccer championships on Saturday at Huntsville.

West Point’s Bailey Sutter had an even-par round of 72 to build a 4-stroke lead over his brother, Rawlin Sutter, who had a 76 for West Point in the Class 5A competition.

Brown sparks UMS-Wright to 7A girls’ lead

UMS-Wright holds 6-stroke lead over Hewitt-Trussville in the Class 7A girls’ team competition with a 227 – thanks in big part to Brown’s outstanding 7-under finish. Grissom’s Klare Johnson finished with the second best 7A round Monday shooting a 1-under 71. UMS finished 11-over Monday and Hewitt was 17 strokes over par at 233.

In Class 6A, Pike Road finished 25 strokes over par Monday with a team round of 241. Spanish Fort is second at 246. Kate Cost of Cullman carded an even-par 72 and holds a 1-stroke lead over Athens’ Adelyn Pike, who finished the day 1-over at 73.

In Class 4A/5A, Alexandria shot a 256 team total to hold a 9-shot advantage over West Point. Kylee Lynn of Beauregard had the low round in 4A/5A with a 73. Polly Kate McCrackin of Hayden was 2 shots back at 75.

In Class 1A/3A, Alabama Christian’s Julie Waldo leads the individual competition with a 1-under 71. Chloe Rule of Lindsay Lane, who set an AHSAA state record during the regular season with a blistering round of 59, shot even par-72 Monday and is 1 stroke off the pace.

Anna Christian Beeker helped Tuscaloosa Academy take the team lead with a 1-over 73. Tuscaloosa Academy shot a team total 227 to hold 43-stroke lead over Mobile Christian.
