AHSAA golf championships: Vestavia Hills boys, Auburn girls win 7A team titles

Class 7A Vestavia Hills and 6A defending champion Homewood ran away with the team titles at the AHSAA Boys Golf State Championships that completed two days of soggy play on Tuesday at Birmingham’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Oxmoor Valley course.

The two Birmingham metro teams were the only squads to finish under par.

The Rebels won the 7A crown for the sixth time and the fourth in the past five years with a 25-under total of 551 (278-273). Homewood took home its third overall championship with a 14-under 562 (285-277).

On the girls’ side, Class 7A Auburn and 4A/5A Tuscaloosa Academy came closest to par to claim state championships. Auburn finished at 5-over for the 36-hole event to claim its fourth team title and first since 2019 while Tuscaloosa Academy won its third straight championship at 6-over. The other girls champs were 6A Pike Road – for its fourth consecutive title – and 1A/3A Wicksburg.

The other boys champions were 5A West Point, 4A Haleyville, 3A Lee-Scott Academy and 1A/2A Bayshore Christian. Haleyville’s title was its fourth straight.

The girls teams counted the top three golfers on each squad while the boys counted the top four scores.

There were 29 boys and six girls that finished the 76th Alabama High School Athletic Association State Golf Tournament under par. Spain Park’s Chase Kyes shot back-to-back rounds of 66 to finish at 12-under 132 to claim Class 6A low medalist. Cullman’s Will Drake shot Tuesday’s low round of 64 to finish a stroke behind Kyes in 6A.

West Point’s Bailey Sutter, who shot a low round of 8-under 64 on Monday, closed with a 2-under 70 Tuesday to win the Class 5A low medalist honors at 10-under 134 – the third lowest total of the tourney. His brother, Rawlin Sutter, finished second in 5A at 5-under 139 (69-70).

Tuscaloosa Academy’s Saxon Skinner took low medalist honors for the girls with back-to-back rounds of 4-under 68 for an 8-under 136 to win the Class 4A/5A title. Alabama Christian’s Julie Waldo was a stroke behind at 7-under 137 (68-69).

The individual leaders in each division:

CLASS 7A BOYS: Thomas Crane of UMS-Wright finished 67-68 – 135 to take low medalist honors at 9-under par. Gus Darnall of Vestavia Hills was second, shooting 69-67 – 136 to finish 8-under. under par. Rebels’ teammates Andrew Davis and Clarke Brown finished tied for third with with 7-under 137 totals.

CLASS 6A BOYS: Spain Park’s Kyes and Cullman’s Drake finished 1-2 with their 132 and 133 totals. J.P. Groat of Fort Payne shot 68-70 – 138, followed by Homewood’s Alex Wahl (70-69-139), Murray Walker of Spanish Fort (67-73 – 140) and three more Homewood golfers: Jake Lowery (72-69 – 140), Kenan Rouse (71-68 – 141) and Andrew Wood (71-71 – 142).

CLASS 5A BOYS: West Point’s Sutter brothers finished 1-2 at 10-under and 5-under with Guntersville’s Ty Hester taking third at 2-over 146 (72-76).

CLASS 4A BOYS: Haleyville’s Hudson Lawson earned low medalist by shooting 5-under 67 Tuesday to finish 4-under 140. Andrew Turner of American Christian shot 72-71 – 143 to finish second.

CLASS 3A BOYS: No golfer finished under par, but Rogers’ Boone Thigpen shot 76-74 – 150 and Lee-Scott’s David Beard had back-to-back rounds of 76 to finish with a 152 total.

CLASS 1A/2A BOYS: Elba’s Jay Williams carded a 3-under 69 Tuesday and earned low medalist with a two-day 4-under 140 score. Waylon White of Bayshore Christian was second at 75-72 – 147.

CLASS 7A GIRLS: Auburn’s Kate Ha, UMS-Wright’s Frances Brown and Grissom’s Klare Jamison tied for low medalist honors with 2-under 142 totals for 36 holes. Ha shot a 68 Tuesday and Jamison shot a 67 Monday.

CLASS 6A GIRLS: Athens’ Adelyn Pike finished 77-71 – 148 while Pike Road’s Beka Yang finished 76-73 – 149 to claim the top two spots. Muscle Shoals’ Annalee Regan was two strokes back at 74-76 – 150.

CLASS 4A/5A GIRLS: Finishing second behind Skinner’s back-to-back rounds of 68 and 8-under 136 finish was Tuscaloosa Academy teammate Anna Christian Beeker, who had rounds of 70 and 77 to finish at 3-over 147. Beauregard’s Kylee Lynn and West Point’s Brooklyn Sutter finished 5-over 149 with identical rounds of 76 and 73.

CLASS 1A/3A: Waldo earned low medalist for Alabama Christian with her 7-under 137 total. Kamdyn Kelley of Providence Christian and Evelyn Tankersley of Alabama Christian both finished 3-over 147.
