AHSAA director Heath Harmon announces hires, change in executive staff

Alabama High School Athletic Association executive director Heath Harmon has made changes in the association’s executive staff with two hires from the Oxford City School System and a shift in one position.

In a news release, the AHSAA said Brian McRae, the principal at C.E. Hanna School Elementary School in Oxford will be associate executive director. McRae is in his 17th year in education where he has been a coach, physical education teacher and assistant principal. He is a graduate of Alabama State University and is on track to complete a doctorate in December.

The AHSAA also hired Oxford High School assistant principal Ryan Barkley as an assistant director. He is in his 20th year in education where he has been a history teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal. Barkley is a graduate of Jacksonville State University.

JT Lawrence, currently an assistant director at the AHSAA, has been named the new director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association. Lawrence came to the AHSAA in 2022. He is a graduate of the University of Montevallo and has been a physical education teacher, coach and athletic director. He is in his 24th year in education/administration.

Harmon started working with the AHSAA in July as the replacement for Alvin Briggs, who officially retired on Sept. 2. Harmon came to the association as its sixth full-time executive director from his position as principal at Oxford High School. He had been principal for eight years and has 26 years experience as a teacher, coach, athletic director and administrator.

The AHSAA has one assistant director position vacancy, the association release said.

The current executive staff includes associate executive director Kim Vickers, CFO Amy Gulledge, director of communications Ron Ingram, assistant director Marvin Chou, director of officials Ken Washington and assistant director Devin Booth.
