AHSAA bowling finals: Southside, Stanhope Elmore girls win
The top seeds in both the Class 1A/5A and Class 6A/7A divisions won Alabama High School Athletic Association Girls State Bowling Championships on Friday at Mobile’s Bowlero Bowling Center.
Southside won its first in the 1A/5A division with a 4-1 win over Scottsboro in the championship match. The Panthers, coached by Zachary Blume, had won four state titles from 2017-20 when there was only one division.
Coach Bridget Wilson’s Stanhope Elmore squad won its first championship in the 9-year history of AHSAA competition. The Mustangs took a 4-0 win over Sparkman in the finals.
Both teams dominated play in their divisions from start to finish both days – earning top seeds after Day 1 on Thursday and never letting up in the championship bracket Baker format play Friday.
Southside (27-4) led 2-0 in the finals before dropping the third game 146-106. Wilson’s team stormed back with a 181-165 win in Game 4 and closed out the state title with a 176-133 victory in the fifth game.
The Panthers rolled to a 4-0 first-round win over Springville (11-6) and a much tougher 4-2 victory over Marbury (13-2) in the semifinals. Southside started slow, losing the first game to the Bulldogs 159-107. Southside got on track and averaged 166.2 pins the rest of the match.
Scottsboro (12-3) outscored Orange Beach 1,034 pins to 994 and won 4-3 in the quarterfinals. The semifinals didn’t get any easier as the Wildcats beat Sipsey Valley 4-3 with just a 60-pin edge, 1,114 to 1,054.
In the girls 6A/7A championship, Stanhope Elmore (12-0) of Millbrook took a quick 2-0 lead and held a 53-pin margin over Sparkman in the finals on the way to handing the Senators (22-2) just their second loss of the season. The Mustangs had a 751-622 pin final margin. Stanhope finished off the win with a 206-143 advantage in Game 4.
Sparkman knocked off defending state champion American Christian 4-3 in the first round – opening with two quick wins and led 3-1 before the Patriots clawed back to tie the match 3-all. The Senators sealed the win with a 172-158 victory in Game 7 and finished with 1,192 pins to American Christian’s 1,099. Sparkman reached the finals with a 4-0 victory over Hewitt-Trussville. The Huskies pulled a shocker in the first round beating No. 2 seed Thompson 4-2.
Stanhope Elmore had a much easier time getting to the finals beating James Clemens and Oak Mountain 4-0. The semifinal win was highlighted by a 240 score in the opening game.
The AHSAA boys’ Championship bracket got underway Friday afternoon with the finals scheduled for approximately 4:30 p.m.
