AHSAA All-Star Week: South takes 2 in basketball; North sweeps cross country

The North All-Stars found themselves in a huge hole after one quarter and were unable to claw their way back as the South All-Stars claimed a 76-65 win in the boys game on Tuesday night at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl Multiplex.

The win gave the South a sweep of the girls-boys basketball doubleheader in the AHSAA All-Star Week competition after the girls took an 85-75 win.

The South raced to a 29-9 advantage in the first period and fended off a feisty North squad the rest of the way. The winners led 47-32 at the half and 66-52 headed into the fourth quarter.

Hale County power forward Zamarion Johnson led the way with 17 points and 3 assists for the South boys. The North All-Stars had no match for the 6-foot-8 Johnson. The South MVP sank 7-of-9 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from the 3-point line.

The South also had balanced scoring behind Johnson with Isaiah Thomas of R.C. Hatch adding 12 points, Dothan’s Diggy Coleman with 11 and Johnson’s Hale County teammate Gage Mayfield with 10. Providence Christian’s Pearce Boone cleared a team-high 8 rebounds and scored 5 points.

Jacobi Sharp of Gadsden City earned North MVP honors with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. He was 6-of-7 at the foul line. Fairfield’s Milton Jones chipped in 10 points and Kaleb Carson of Homewood added 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Hannah Smith of Montgomery Catholic scored 18 points with 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks, including her final one in the waning seconds of the third period when she rejected a strong post move by Hoover’s 6-2 center Khloe Ford. Ford did finish with 11 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.

Alma Bryant’s Madi-Marie Grayson delivered 5-of-8 on 3-pointers – with 4 coming in the third quarter as the teams headed into the final quarter knotted at 55.
