AHSAA 6A tennis: Mountain Brook girls, boys claim titles
The Mountain Brook girls’ tennis team extended its state record with another AHSAA championship on Tuesday at the Mobile Tennis Center and the boys’ squad did the same – even with two matches left to be played.
The Spartans’ girls, coached by Susan Farlow, swept the Class 6A singles and doubles to claim their 33rd Alabama High School Athletic Association state girls’ tennis title. St. Paul’s and Montgomery Academy are tied for second for most championships with 18. UMS-Wright has won 16 and Vestavia Hills owns 12 titles.
On Tuesday, Mountain Brook won the title with 84 points. Decatur finished second with 52 points, followed by St. Paul’s with 36.
On the boys’ side, Mountain Brook leads Homewood 84-49 with the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches postponed until Friday at 1 p.m. at Lagoon Park in Montgomery. Spartans’ No. 1 singles player Luke Schwefler will play for the title against Spanish Fort’s Goodwin Holley. The No. 1 doubles crown will be decided between Mountain Brook’s Schwefler/Max Gayden and Trinity’s team of brothers Samuel Treadwell/James Treadwell.
Trinity is in third place in the boys’ tournament.
Mountain Brook’s boys have now won a record 27 state championships. Montgomery Academy has won 17 titles and UMS-Wright has 15.
Senior Pippa Roy won her third straight No. 1 singles championship, beating Decatur’s Abby Glover 6-1, 6-1 in the finals. She teamed with Annie Lacey to beat Glover and Anna Harbin of Decatur 6-1, 6-3 to win the No. 1 doubles title.
Roy is now one of seven AHSAA champions to have won at least three titles in a row at No. 1 singles. Six have won four straight.
Lacey won the No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-0 over Lilly Kidder of McGill-Toolen. The other singles winners for the Spartans were Ann Royal Goodson at No. 3, No. 4 Mary Neale Polk, No. 5 Mae Mae Lacey and No. 6 Maoire Dowling.
Mae Mae Lacey and Coleman won the No. 2 doubles crown while Polk and Mary Jackson Darnall took the No. 3 title.
Schwefler advanced to the No. 1 boys’ singles finals with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 10-4 win over Trinity’s Timothy Hornsby.
If Farlow’s Spartans can win the final two championships – like the girls – they will have swept all individual and doubles championships at the 6A meet this year. Mountain Brook’s boys are claiming their first state title since 2017.
Mountain Brook’s singles winners on Tuesday were Connor Jenkins at No. 2, Thomas Austin at No. 3, Guy Mitchell at No. 4, Max Gayden at No, 5 and George Dumas at No. 6. Capturing doubles titles for the Spartans were Logan Woodall and Jenkins at No. 2, and the team of Austin and Mitchell at No. 3.
