After Alabama architect dies, friend completes his dream lake house: See inside the $1.2M home

Imagine a modern, five-level lake house with a private boat dock being featured on “Forgotten Alabama,” a Facebook page that typically highlights decades-old abandoned structures. That’s what happened to the house at 180 Grays Ferry Road on Lake Jordan in Titus, Ala., after the owner, architect Mark Wassweiler, passed away during construction.

Wasswieler, who began the project prior to 2010, never made formal plans, according to his neighbor Bert Loeb, who eventually bought the unfinished house.

“He sketched it on napkins and paper bags as he was having it built,” Loeb said. “This home is extremely well known by lake visitors as it had been resting partially constructed for over 15 years.”

After Loeb bought the home in 2021, he asked another friend for his help completing the project.

“With the help of another good friend who also happens to be an exceptionally talented architect, Andy Smith, we completed the home, hopefully adhering to Mark’s anticipated grandeur,” Loeb said. “Andy was very instrumental in finishing out some interior rooms and features that Mark had not completed, as well as overall finishes and ideas.” It is now on the market for $1.2 million.
