More than a decade ago, the Africatown Welcome Center was a deteriorating trailer overlooking a 149-year-old cemetery.

It sat adjacent to the vandalized busts of Cudjoe Lewis, the famed survivor of the Clotilda, and Africatown’s most recognizable storyteller, and John Smith, the late Prichard mayor.
