Actor in iconic coming-of-age movie ‘Dazed and Confused’ dead at 54

Nicky Katt, most known for his roles in the film Dazed and Confused and the ABC television show Boston Public, has died, according to news reports. He was 54.

John Sloss, Katt’s attorney, confirmed his death to The Hollywood Reporter. No other details were given.

Katt, originally from South Dakota, started acting at 7, appearing in episodes of TV shows including CHiPs, Father Murphy, Code Red, Herbie, the Love Bug, Voyagers! and Quincy, M.E.

In 1993, he landed one of his most notable roles, Clint Bruno, in the coming-of-age indie film Dazed and Confused. The movie also starred Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Parker Posey and Joey Lauren Adams.

One of his longest roles is Harry Senate on Boston Public, a David E. Kelley series about Boston high school faculty members navigating school and their personal lives.

He made a brief but memorable appearance in Christopher Nolan’s smash hit The Dark Knight. He was a SWAT officer unknowingly being driven by Jim Gordon, played by Gary Oldman.

“I didn’t sign up for this,” he exclaims when the Joker, played by the late Heath Ledger, pulls out a bazooka to stop their police caravan.

Katt appeared in a 2004 off-Broadway production of Woody Allen’s A Second-Hand Memory.

Other credits include Love & War, Friends, A Time to Kill, Batman & Robin, Rules of Engagement, The Guardian, School of Rock, King of the Hill, Monk, Law & Order, Death Proof and The Sitter.

His last credited role was on the 2018 TV show Casual.
