Accused killer of Huntsville police officer waives right to legal counsel
The man charged with the fatal 2023 shooting of Huntsville police officer Garrett Crumby has waived his right to legal counsel.
Juan Robert Laws, 25, notified the court in a form mailed from Madison County Jail on April 20, according to court documents released Wednesday.
Crumby was shot and killed March 28, 2023, while responding to a call on Governors Way off Interstate 565. Police officer Albert Morin, who also responded, was seriously wounded. Laws’ girlfriend, Arionne Douglas, was also shot.
Crumby and Morin was responding to a “shots fired” call when the shooting occurred. After Morin knocked on the door, a woman could be heard screaming inside. Morin then opened the door and shots were fired at the officers.
During a hearing last year, an ALEA special agent testified that Crumby sustained 10 wounds in the shooting.
According to investigators, Laws was wearing body armor when police encountered him.
Laws was taken into custody less than two hours later.
