Academy Awards 2023: Can Will Smith attend Oscars ceremony after slapping Chris Rock?
The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were unveiled by Tuesday, and the Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 12, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
It will also mark a year since the infamous Will Smith slap.
The actor slapped host Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
The exchange began when Rock made a joke about Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, saying, “Jada, I love you. ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it, all right?” The reference was of the 1997 film “G.I. Jane,” starring Demi Moore, who shaved her head to portray a fictional Navy Seal candidate.
Pinkett Smith revealed in 2018 that she was diagnosed with alopecia.
Smith walked onto the stage from his front-row seat and slapped Rock with an open palm. Smith walked back to his seat and shouted for Rock to “keep my wife’s name out of your (expletive) mouth.” Rock replied that he was just making a “G.I. Jane” joke. Smith yelled back at him a second time.
Smith later Sunday won the best actor award for his role in “King Richard.”
Rock declined to file charges when asked by police during the Oscars ceremony.
The Monday after the show, Smith apologized to Rock and the Academy in a social media post.
Will or can Will Smith attend this year’s Academy Awards?
The answer is no.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced in April of 2022 it had banned the actor for 10 years from all Oscar-related events.
The ban means Smith, who was presented with the best actor Oscar in 2022, cannot return to the Oscars or attend any Academy events.
“The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage,” a statement released by the Academy said in April.
“During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short – unprepared for the unprecedented.
“Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation. The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.”
