Abused 4-year-old tests positive for drugs; 17-year-old babysitter arrested, Mobile police say

A 17-year-old is in custody, charged with aggravated child abuse and chemical endangerment after police were notified of a 4-year-old with signs of physical abuse and who tested positive for drugs.

Mobile police said officers were dispatched to USA Children and Women’s Hospital about 9 p.m. on a report of a “severely injured” child with multiple injuries and extensive bruising. Police did not specify which drug was found in the child’s system.

Monday afternoon, investigators identified the primary suspect — a 17-year-old male who frequently serves as a babysitter for the child’s mother. He was located and taken into custody, later transported to Mobile Metro Jail. His identity has not been released because he is a minor.

The child has been discharged from the hospital and continues to recover, police said.

In addition, the Alabama Department of Human Resources is working with investigators to determine the full set of circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure the child’s well-being, according to police.
