A night without the kids: Birmingham celebrates moms with free event

Being a mom is hard, and the city of Birmingham knows it.

That’s why the city, along with The Penny Foundation, is hosting a free event to celebrate moms called Embrace Mothers Mom’s Night Out on Jan. 30.

All area mothers are invited to the event, which will have a film screening and time for fellowship at the Sidewalk Film Center and Cinema, located at 1821 2nd Ave. North.

The doors open at 6:15 pm and free beverages and popcorn will be served. There will be time for mingling with other mothers before “Waiting to Exhale” begins at 7 p.m. The movie is about four African-American women and their relationship with their significant others, and it stars Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, and Loretta Devine.

This event is to show all the city’s appreciation for the hard work that mothers do on a daily basis. Some people may think that it is easy to take care of a child or children, but the city of Birmingham and The Penny Foundation want to recognize that the job is hard, especially for single moms. The two groups know that the phrase, “it takes a village to raise a child,” is true.

Vouchers worth $30 for babysitting services on the Wyndy app will be given to everyone who signs up for the event. Embrace Mothers Mom’s Night Out is being put on with help from Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, a national network of mayors advocating to provide Americans with an income floor.

Embrace Mothers is a partnership with Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, who stated on their website that “women — most specifically, mothers — are the bedrock of Birmingham.” The program awarded Birmingham a $500,000 grant for the pilot program, part of a nationwide research project to evaluate the impacts of guaranteed income on individuals and families.

As part of the program, 110 single mothers will receive a guaranteed $375 monthly income for a year in a pilot program. The funding comes from foundation grants, not city funds.
