‘A lot of pressure’: Tensions rise as Alabama man ponders first cut on ‘Farmer Wants a Wife’
Feed the chickens. Tend the horses. Drink a few beers. Shoot some pool. Figure out whose heart you’re going to break.
It was just another day on “Farmer Wants a Wife,” as Alabama’s Jay Woods faced his first big decision on the FOX reality series. Woods, 25, a hay and cattle farmer, chose five women for his dating pool on the show, then brought them to his rural property in Florence. Now, three episodes into Season 3, Woods was tasked with eliminating one of them.
“With this process, it’s definitely hard,” Woods said on Thursday’s program. “I mean, I have five great women. I feel like I can’t go wrong, but I’m just trying to figure out the one that’s really right for me.”

To help with his evaluations, Woods recruited his friend, Dyjonn “Poppie” Turner, and his cousin, LaDarius Woods, for a meet-and-greet with the women at The Boiler Room, a bar in downtown Florence. The goal: to get his buddies’ impressions of the dating pool and gauge the women’s suitability for farm life.
If you missed Thursday’s episode — or simply want a refresher on Woods and his TV quest for love — here’s what happened.
Repping Alabama: J’Marick “Jay” Woods grew up in a farming family in Lauderdale County. Football has been a big part of his life. (“If you’re not from Alabama, you’ve gotta know that football is king down here,” Woods said.) He played for Florence High School, the University of Michigan and Duke University before injuries compelled him to call it quits. When his NFL dreams were dashed, Woods moved back home and bought his grandfather’s land, which had been sold to others in the meantime. He now farms hay and cattle, and works as a sales rep.
Other farmers: Along with Woods, Season 3 of “Farmer Wants a Wife” focuses on Matt Warren, 30, an avocado and exotic fruit farmer from Morro Bay, California; John Sansone, 25, a soy, corn and wheat farmer from St. Louis, Missouri; and Colton Hendricks, 28, a cattle rancher and horse trainer in Mena, Arkansas.
How it works: Each farmer on the show has selected five women who are transported to his property for dates, chores and getting-to-know-you sessions. The field of contestants narrows through 12-14 episodes, with the goal of finding the perfect mates for the four farmers.

Fabulous five: Grace Clark, Julia Mya, Karina Sabol, T’yana Nolen and Viviane-Lee Reed were chosen by Woods during the season’s debut episode. He quickly forged a romantic connection with Clark — in fact, the two had a sweet first date at a Florence High School football game — and Woods seemed charmed by Sabol’s cheerful energy. But Mya (who’s pegged herself as a Malibu “princess”) and Reed (who’s been relatively quiet on previous episodes) came under extra scrutiny this week.

Viviane-Lee Reed, left, and Julia Mya faced questions from Jay Woods on the “Meet the Friends” episode of “Farmer Wants a Wife.” They’re in the dating pool for Woods, a hay and cattle farmer in Florence(FOX photo)
Quotable: “I think that with me and Grace, you know, we have a great connection, but I want to connect with all the ladies here,“ Woods said. ”Vivian-Lee, you know, she rides horses. She works in the zoo. I definitely can see her fitting in on the farm, but I’m just looking for that spark. … With Julia, I’m attracted to her for sure, but she’s definitely not used to the farm life. It’s a lot of pressure on me, but it’s time to really lock in, and get to know what you want to know to find a person for you.”
Doubtful diva: Mya has been portrayed as something of a drama queen on previous episodes, worrying about her hair extensions and refusing to get her hands dirty on the farm. But she confessed to a few jitters this week. “I am nervous that meeting his friends could put me in jeopardy,” Mya said. “I think that if his friends are country, they will for sure bring up that I’m a city girl and probably can’t hang in this lifestyle. … But hopefully his friends can see that I’m not just a Malibu Barbie.”
Bar-room blitz: Jay took all five women to The Boiler Room for drinks, pool, darts, bowling and Skee-Ball. His pals, Poppie and LaDarius, joined them for the evening, watching the interactions carefully and questioning the ladies in a fairly pointed way.
Game over: Eyebrows were raised when Julia Mya threw up her hands and declined to shoot pool after a single try, pointing to her sparkly stiletto heels as a hindrance. “This is horrible. I hate this,” Mya said. “I’m done. It’s over. I’m not playing. It’s not happening.”
Put a ring on it: T’yana Nolen, a nurse and model from Ohio, startled Woods’ friends when she declared herself unwilling to move to Florence — unless she was engaged to Woods, that is. “I will not move unless there’s a ring on my finger,” Nolen said. ”That’s fair. Like, I’m not gonna to pack up and move myself. I’m not gonna move for my boyfriend. It is what it is, but I’m very open about it, not a yes-man.”
Marriage material?: After his group date at The Boiler Room, Woods expressed doubts about Viviane-Lee Reed, who told him she’d dated guys in college but had never been in a “hardcore relationship.” “With Viviane-Lee, I didn’t realize, you know, she’s never been in a relationship before,“ Woods said. ”I’m here to find my wife. You know, I’m not looking just for a girlfriend or a fun time. It’s definitely concerning.”

Double trouble: Despite the feedback from his friends, Woods confessed that he still lacked clarity about his dating pool. He pulled Julia Mya and Viviane-Lee Reed aside to chat over cookies and lemonade, sharing his concerns with the women.
Moment of truth: “I really want to figure out your thoughts on Florence, Alabama,” Woods told Mya. “Because from my perspective, you come in and (don’t) really want to do any type of dirty work. But then I see you out there, and you getting more comfortable and you opening up. So it’s like, I see her growing, but is it something that will last? … Do you really want to be here?”
Cliffhanger: Woods seemed on the verge of sending one of the women home, but the episode ended before he announced his decision. Is Mya on the chopping block? Could Reed get the boot? We’ll have to wait until Episode 4 to find out.
Next up: On the April 10 episode, titled “You Can’t Pick All 5,” Woods takes his dating pool to a barn dance. In a preview clip, viewers see him kissing Grace Clark and Karina Sabol, but Viviane-Lee Reed is conspicuously absent. Woods also can be seen with his head in his hands, evidently dealing with some tension that erupts between T’yana Nolen and Julia Mya. (“You basically called me a ho,” Mya says.)
If you watch: New episodes of “Farmer Wants a Wife” air on Thursdays at 8 p.m. CT on FOX. Kimberly Williams-Paisley is the host of Season 3, which was filmed in advance.
