A little snow possible in north Alabama
Parts of northeast Alabama were getting some light snow on Friday afternoon as a weather system brought more arctic air into the state.
The National Weather Service in Huntsville issued a special weather statement about the snow on Friday afternoon specifically for those in Limestone, Madison, Marshall, Jackson and DeKalb counties.
Forecasters said widespread black ice and dangerous travel conditions were expected to continue across those areas through Saturday.
The weather service said very light snow showers will continue to move across parts of north-central and northeast Alabama just ahead of a cold front through 6 p.m.
“A very light accumulation on grassy surfaces and elevated objects may occur,” the weather service said.
“However, this light snow will not further exacerbate the already dangerous travel conditions from black ice as any accumulations will be too minor.”
Forecasters are concerned about the possibility of black ice on North Alabama roadways through Sunday morning.
The weather service said melted snow and ice could refreeze as temperatures fall this afternoon.
“This will create areas of black ice producing very icy and dangerous conditions on a number of area roadways, including some major highways through noon today,” the weather service said.
“Bridges and overpasses, especially those crossing the Tennessee River, are especially at risk. For a complete list of affected roadways, consult local media outlets.
Any ice will stick around for a while. Temperatures in north Alabama may not rise above freezing until Sunday, according to weather service forecasts.
