A-List No. 13: McAdory’s JaCorey Whitted creates problems for defenses

The A-List is AL.com’s ranking of the top 15 senior prospects in the state of Alabama. We will count down one each day until No. 1 is revealed Aug. 23.

JaCorey Whitted isn’t the stereotypical loud leader of football legend, disruptive and boisterous with a rah-rah personality.

The McAdory tight end does his job on the field in a quiet, unassuming manner… mostly.

“He’s a good kid, a quiet kid,” said McAdory coach Aryvia Holmes. “I don’t know if I’ve ever been around anybody like him because he really doesn’t fall into any category except on the football field when he gets really, really upset and angry and plays with aggression. He turns into more of that leader, Alpha-Dog role.”

Whitted is the AL.com A-List No. 13 senior prospect, a 6-foot-6, 245-pound tight end with plenty of Power 5 college scholarship offers. The 4-star player narrowed the list to 6 with Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Arkansas State.

He’s part of a senior class of about 30 players for McAdory that Holmes expects to make a difference.

Whitted, who also plays basketball, is a big part of the plan. He has the skills and size to be a versatile tight end in college, but also comfortable spread out as a wide receiver.

“He’s just a special talent,” Holmes said. “He creates a major mismatch with defenders because of his size and athleticism. He is sneaky fast and I’ve never seen him run down so once he gets going, he’s really, really hard to stop.

“He’s a tremendous basketball player and I think that contributed to his agility and athleticism. I think if he had just been solely a football player, he probably wouldn’t be as effective, making guys miss. I think basketball has helped him over the years.”

Whitted has developed into a play-making threat since Holmes took over the program before the 2021 season.

“When I got here two years ago, coaching him as a sophomore, his biggest deficit was tracking the ball,” Holmes said. “It’s different in football from basketball and one of the things that young receivers struggle with, tracking the ball. It just doesn’t necessarily come naturally, but he’s worked really, really hard on that and, I was talking to my staff last night about how he just doesn’t drop balls anymore.”

A physical player, Whitted creates problems in the secondary.

“Honestly, the reason I’ve kept him at receiver is because he is such a mismatch.” Holmes said. “You have to figure out what you’re going to do with him.

“I’m definitely glad he’s on our team.”

A-LIST NO. 13: JACOREY WHITTED, MCADORY

Position: Tight end

Height/Weight: 6-6, 245

College status: Uncommitted

Randy Kennedy’s scouting report: JaCorey Whitted has the size to be an in-line tight end in college football and beyond. But, for now, his best skill is as a pass-catcher with the ability to high-point balls over smaller defensive backs.
