‘A last little hoorah’: Auburn’s NFL prospects put on a show at Pro Day

Before the cameras cut on, former Auburn defensive backs Jaylin Simpson and DJ James stood with their arms draped over each other’s shoulders.

It was beginning to set in that it would be their last time competing with each other wearing orange and blue — that is unless the tandem happens to both land with the Denver Broncos or something somewhere down the line.

“My last little hoorah with DJ, Mighty and Puck,” Simpson said, referring to the three other defensive backs in James, Nehemiah Pritchett and Zion Puckett. “Our last time probably doing drills with each other together. So it was fun to do that and have a last little ride with them.”

Auburn had 17 players participate in Friday morning’s Pro Day, which was held inside the team’s weight room and indoor practice facility.

With the quartet of defensive backs highlighting the action, guys like former Auburn defensive linemen Marcus Harris and Justin Rogers, a handful of offensive linemen and wide receivers, among others, also joined in on the action.

At the event’s start, 31 of the NFL’s 32 teams were represented by scouts with the Buffalo Bills being the only team not represented.

In the case of Harris, Pritchett, Puckett, Rogers and Simpson, Friday’s drills were familiar after they participated in the NFL’s scouting combine in late February.

For some, that experience in Indianapolis a few weeks back gave them a goal to reach — or rather improve upon. Such was the case for Harris and Simpson.

On the 225-pound bench press exercise, Harris tallied 27 reps at the combine. At Auburn’s Pro Day on Friday, he tallied 34.

“I didn’t think I was going to get 34 on the bench,” Harris said afterwards. “I was just trying to get 30 but I’m glad I hit 34.”

Meanwhile, Simpson was eyeing the opportunity to log a 40-inch vertical jump after hitting a 39.50 at the combine.

Like Harris, Simpson accomplished his mission as he came in right at 40 inches with a jump that made his former teammates erupt with cheers.

“I didn’t think I had much to prove,” said Simpson, who graded out well at the combine. “My goal was to come out and have fun on the last go-around with my boys. That was the main thing for me.”
