A few strong storms possible Saturday in south Alabama

The National Weather Service thinks this weekend could be a rainy one for Alabama, and south Alabama could potentially face a few strong storms.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather for part of south Alabama for Saturday.

A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible. There is no severe weather risk for the rest of the state, but rain will be possible on both Saturday and Sunday.

An area of low pressure is expected to develop near the Gulf Coast near Louisiana or Mississippi and track to the east, raising rain chances statewide on Saturday.

The National Weather Service in Mobile said forecasters will be watching to see if the storms in south Alabama on Saturday are elevated or surfaced based, and that is not clear at this point. Surface-based storms will increase the potential for a few tornadoes.

Storms in south Alabama on Saturday could also be hail producers, according to forecasters.

The most likely timeframe for storms looks to be Saturday afternoon into Saturday night.

The weather service thinks rain could linger behind the storms into Sunday, but no severe weather is expected.
