A few snowflakes possible tonight in parts of Alabama
A few spots in northern Alabama may see a couple of snowflakes overnight, according to forecasters.
The snow is expected to mostly be confined to higher elevations of north and east Alabama, and while there could be a slippery spot or two in the mountains, no major travel issues are expected in the rest of the state.
Here’s a look at the forecast from the National Weather Service in Huntsville for north Alabama:
The National Weather Service will be watching temperatures closely overnight. They are expected to drop into the low to mid-30s in north Alabama and remain above freezing for the rest of the state (see the low temperature forecast for tonight at the top of this post).
Models have trended warmer with expected low temperatures overnight. However, the weather service in Huntsville noted that “Just a degree or two cooler could result in a greater amount of a snow, especially in the higher terrain.”
Widespread rain is expected through the day today, but no severe weather. Rain could briefly mix with snow overnight in northern parts of the state, according to forecasters.
The warmer ground and rain during the day is expected to keep overall accumulations to just a few tenths of an inch in the higher elevations, the weather service said.
However, if temperatures fall farther than expected the amounts could increase, forecasters added.
Any snow that falls won’t hang around long, if at all. Temperatures on Sunday are expected to climb into the 50s and 60s statewide.
