‘Wonder Years’ reboot set in Alabama canceled after 2 seasons on ABC

ABC’s reboot of “The Wonder Years” has been canceled after two seasons, according to reports from Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and other media outlets.

The new “Wonder Years” – a reinvention of the beloved coming-of-age saga that aired from 1988 to 1993 – focused on a Black family in Montgomery during the late 1960s. Alabama native Saladin K. Patterson was a key member of the creative team, serving as a writer and executive producer.

The new series, which launched in fall 2021, won a Peabody Award in 2022 for its storytelling excellence and “willful depiction of Black joy.” Patterson, who was born in Tuskegee, described the show as “a love letter to Montgomery,” the city where he grew up during the 1970s and ‘80s.

The original “Wonder Years” earned widespread kudos for its fusion of warm nostalgia and pointed social commentary. That series centered on a white middle-class family in an unnamed suburban town and was told from the viewpoint of Kevin Arnold (portrayed by Fred Savage), who experienced the joys and frustrations of being an American teenager in the late ‘60s to early ‘70s.

“When I was approached to do a new version of the show, I didn’t want to be the person who messed up ‘The Wonder Years’ name,” Patterson said during a 2021 interview with AL.com. “I really set out to make it as distinct as possible, to set it apart from the original. I wanted it to be about its own family – its own characters, its own point of view – and be as specific as possible about a Black middle class family. I’m from Montgomery, so I thought, let’s fully embrace it. We can deal with all the true things that family experience would have been.”

The cast of the new “Wonder Years” included Elisha Williams, Dule Hill, Saycon Sengbloh, Laura Kariuki, Amari O’Neli, Julian Lerner, Milan Ray and Allen Maldonado. Atlanta was the primary filming location for the series, but some scenes were filmed in Montgomery.

The main character of “The Wonder Years,” Dean Williams (played by Elisha Williams), was a 12-year-old boy trying to find his place in the world. The character was living in turbulent times marked by racial injustice, social unrest, political polarization and more. However, Dean also was part of a loving family, a close-knit neighborhood and a proud community with deep roots.

Over the course of more than 30 episodes, viewers got to known young Dean, his family, friends, schoolmates and teachers. Don Cheadle provided narration, looking back at Dean’s adolescence through the wisdom of adulthood.

The “Wonder Years” reboot received mostly positive reviews during its first season, but viewership began to decline, according to media reports. Also, Savage, who served as a director and executive producer for the series, was fired in 2022 after an investigation for misconduct.

The second season of “The Wonder Years” was pushed to summer 2023, and did not fare well with viewers. The “Wonder Years” reboot was produced by 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios. Disney also owns ABC.

“‘The Wonder Years’ ranks as the lowest-rated and least watched ABC series this summer, behind the network’s unscripted slate,” Deadline Hollywood said. “It also would rank last among ABC’s series that aired during the 2022-23 season.”

Patterson confirmed the series cancellation in an Instagram post on Saturday.

“I’m still processing, to be honest,” Patterson said. “But I owe it to the amazing writers, cast and crew that walked in their God-given gifts everyday to help make this show one I will be proud of for the rest of my life. …. The two biggest compliments I never got tired of hearing were: 1) We watch this show together as a family, and 2) Thank you for showing the positive side of our experience. I pray that God’s purpose was fulfilled.”
