‘She didn’t deserve any of this,’ says granddaughter of murdered Foley woman

The granddaughter of a Foley woman found murdered inside a motel Aug. 30 has launched a GoFundMe page to help with the cost of cremating her “Nana,” while Baldwin County continues to investigate who killed 69-year-old Shirley Smith.

Smith’s body was found inside a room at the Town & Country Motel, with what investigators said were several apparent stab wounds. Additional investigation led the case to be classified as a homicide.

Smith’s daughter, 36-year-old Katie Lee Smith, was taken into custody less than two days later and remains in the Baldwin County Jail under $38,000 bond.

Maci Smith (left) and her grandmother, Shirley Smith, in a photo posted to a GoFundMe account started to help with cremation costs for Shirley Smith, who was found murdered inside a Foley motel.

She is charged with abuse of a corpse after wrapping her mother’s body inside a sheet and placing it in a wheelbarrow inside a room at the Town & Country Motel, according to court records.

Katie Lee Smith is also charged with two counts of resisting arrest, two counts of attempting to elude police, criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct.

She is not, however, charged with her mother’s murder.

Contacted Friday, Capt. Andre Smith of the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit, said he would be meeting with his team to go over the latest information in the case and would not release new information until after that meeting.

Shirley Smith’s granddaughter, Hali Smith, said in her GoFundMe post her grandmother was “like my mom, my nana, and my best friend.”

“I hate that she is now gone and I’m not able to go to her and hug her one last time. I miss her more than anything, she was my everything,” Hali wrote.

“She didn’t deserve any of this. Please help us. Thank you.”
