‘Jaw dropping’: Democrats slam Tuberville’s over military remark

At least three Democratic lawmakers on Wednesday condemned Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s remark referring to the military not being “an equal opportunity employer,” calling his comments “jaw dropping” and saying the Alabama senator is “the worst of the worst.”

“The way Sen. Tuberville talks so openly about about white supremacy is just jaw dropping,” tweeted Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut on Wednesday. “I refuse to allow this to feel normal.”

Tuberville made the remark during an appearance Tuesday on Bloomberg Television’s “Balance of Power” while explaining why he did not vote to confirm Gen. C.Q. Brown as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Last week, Brown sailed through his nomination by a vote of 83-11 as the first confirmation vote held since Tuberville placed a hold on military nominations in February.

“Let me tell you something. Our military is not an equal opportunity employer,” the Alabama Republican said on the program.

“We’re looking for the best of the best to do whatever. We’re not looking for different groups, social justice groups. We don’t want to single-handedly destroy our military from within,” he said. “We all need to be one. It’s like a football team I coached. You can’t have different groups. Everybody’s got to be together to win. There’s no second place in war.”

Rep. Jim Clyburn, a South Carolina Democrat, condemned Tuberville’s remarks in an interview with Bloomberg Television.

“He is the worst of the worst,” Clyburn said. “The people of Alabama ought to be embarrassed about that.”

And Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California fact checked Tuberville while taking a swipe at the Alabama senator.

“Since GOP Senator Tuberville never served in the military, he doesn’t understand that the military is an equal opportunity employer,” Lieu tweeted Wednesday. “Our military does not discriminate based on race.”
