âGoodbye Birminghamâ: Queenâs Park bar announces closure after 5 years
Queen’s Park, a popular cocktail bar in downtown Birmingham, will close permanently on Dec. 30, the last night of its holiday pop-up.
The business, located at 112 24th St. North in the city’s Loft District, announced its closure in an Instagram post on Wednesday afternoon.
“It is with much sadness, that we announce our closure at the end of the service on December 30th. 4 more days to come see the staff and say your goodbyes,” the post reads. “Cheers and thank you Birmingham!”
Within an hour of the announcement, the post was liked more than 1,000 times, with comments pouring in to bemoan the closure.
“This is devastating,” one commenter wrote.
“Wait whaaaaaa?” added another.
The bar, co-owned by Larry “Mudd” Townley and Laura Newman, opened five years ago. Townley said in a Facebook post that he and Newman are separating. Representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment for this article.
Patrons typically stand in lines out the door during the holiday season, even on some weeknights, as the bar is well-known locally for its six-week-long “Miracle on 24th Street” theme.
The concept started in New York City in 2014 and has expanded internationally, including to Queen’s Park and other bars in Alabama, including in Huntsville and Montgomery.
The pop-up features 12 signature Christmas cocktails, two shots, nonalcoholic drinks, and the bar is decked out with ornaments, garland, bows and other holiday decorations from floor to ceiling.
Queen’s Park said in the Instagram post that the local holiday pop-up will “take on a new life” and continue in November next year.
Its name is inspired by the historic, Trinidad-based Queen’s Park Hotel and its namesake cocktail, which flourished after the U.S. prohibited alcohol in the 1920s.
Co-owner and beverage director Newman became the first female bartender to win the United States Bartender Guild’s prestigious World Class competition, and went on to place second at the global finals in Berlin.
Last year, Queen’s Park was named as a regional semifinalist for the cocktail conference Tales of the Cocktail’s 2022 awards for the Best U.S. Cocktail Bar category.
Queen’s Park has a sister neighborhood dive bar, Neon Moon, located around the corner. Any gift cards will be eligible for the next four days at Queen’s Park, or through April 1 at Neon Moon, per the Instagram post.
