âDaily Affirmationsâ with Nick Saban: The olâ GOAT is mellowing with age
This is an opinion cartoon.
“I’m good enough. I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.” – Daily Affirmation with Stuart Smalley, vintage Saturday Night Live
Nick Saban is still a no-nonsense dude, but the tough ol’ GOAT seems to be mellowing with age. He’s a lot more relaxed and positive – (almost happy) – than is considered appropriate for an iconic football coach. Sometimes, even after a loss.
After Alabama’s heartbreaking defeat by Michigan in the Rose Bowl, it’s as if he went into a quiet room, took a good look in the mirror and gave himself a Daily Affirmation: “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.” And then he delivered that same message to his team.
From Joe Goodman’s column: “We just didn’t finish the last four minutes of the game like we would like to, and we’re all very disappointed, and the players are disappointed, as well,” Saban said. “But one thing that I told them in the locker room after the game, this is one of the most amazing seasons in Alabama football history in terms of where this team came from, what they were able to accomplish and what they were able to do, winning the SEC Championship, and really, really proud of this group.”
The fans don’t even know who this GOAT is anymore. Stuart Smalley voice: “But that’s … O – Kay.”
Thirty some-odd-years ago when Saturday Night Live was a teenager, Al Franken performed some skits called Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley. Here is the one featuring Michael Jordan.
