âClick it or ticketâ on Alabama highways this Memorial Day weekend
Memorial Day weekend marks the official start to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s ‘Summer of Safety’ campaign, which will bring increased highway and marine patrol through Labor Day weekend.
ALEA is preparing for an influx of people on roadways and waterways this weekend and have stated that their highway and marine divisions will be “actively patrolling” for anyone operating a boat or car while impaired.
“Summer is a wonderful time to plan family vacations, travel and enjoy the waterways. Unfortunately, it can also be filled with hazards and has proven to be one of the most dangerous times of the year,” said Hal Taylor, the ALEA Secretary, in a press release. “Safety is our top priority, and this holiday weekend will be no different as we are proud to participate and conduct a variety of initiatives, details and safety events in the days leading up to Memorial Day to reduce crashes on both the highways and waterways in order to save lives.”
The law enforcement agency will also participate in the “Click it or Ticket” campaign, which runs until June 4. Drivers can expect numerous license checkpoints across the state.,
As part of National Safe Boating Week, the state police say they will share important boating and water safety reminders. ALEA Troopers and Tuscaloosa Police lake patrol officers will also be stepping up enforcement on Lake Tuscaloosa this weekend to make sure boaters are wearing life jackets and no one is drinking alcohol while operating a boat, according to CBS 42.
“There will be zero tolerance and it’s the same as driving on the highway and it’s the same as driving a boat if you drive drunk you will go to jail,” Wes Hollingsworth, a Tuscaloosa lake patrol officer, told the TV station.
