A Mobile man is facing from 20 years to life in prison after a Mobile County jury found him guilty of two counts of sodomizing a child under the age of 12.

The Mobile District Attorney’s Office said the young girl came forward in 2019 to report the abuse by then 29-year-old Calvin Law. A Mobile grand jury indicted Law in 2020 and he was initially arrested in September of that year.

“Cases that involve any level of harm to a child are reprehensible,” said district attorney Keith Blackwood. “We will do everything the law allows us to do to ensure those who commit such outrageous crimes against children are held accountable.”

The young victim testified at trial, aided by a certified “facility dog” used in courtrooms to bring comfort to young and/or traumatized witnesses.

“Brave” and “amazing” were the terms the DA’s office used to describe the young girl.

The DA’s Child Victim Prosecution Team and the Child Advocacy Center worked together to “bring justice to the young victim,” according to the DA’s office.

Law is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 16. In addition to a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years (up to life), Law is also subject to a fine of up to $60,000 and, if ultimately released from prison, 10 years of post-release supervision.

Law, who court records show has a lengthy criminal background, is still awaiting trial on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
