‘Auburn killer’ Diego Pavia transferring to SEC school

Former New Mexico State quarterback and celebrated Auburn killer Diego Pavia is transferring to Vanderbilt, he announced Wednesday.

Pavia passed for 201 yards and three touchdowns in the Aggies’ 31-10 victory at Jordan-Hare Stadium last November. He has one season of eligibility remaining and could get another shot at Hugh Freeze and the Tigers on Nov. 2, when the Commodores travel to Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Pavia led New Mexico State to a 10-5 finish in 2023, passing for 2,973 yards and 24 touchdowns and also rushing for 923 yards and seven scores. The Albuquerque native played two seasons in junior college before joining the Aggies in 2022.

Pavia will be reunited at Vanderbilt with former New Mexico State head coach Jerry Kill, who was hired by Clark Lea as chief consultant to the head coach and senior offensive advisor. Former NMSU assistants Tim Beck and Melvin Rice were also recently hired by the Commodores, who finished 2-10 last season.

Three Vanderbilt quarterbacks entered the transfer portal after the 2023 season. AJ Swann transferred to LSU, Ken Seals to TCU and Walter Taylor to Colorado.

Vanderbilt has also added two other transfer quarterbacks: Utah’s Nate Johnson and Blaze Berlowitz, who was Pavia’s backup last season at New Mexico State.
