‘Armed and dangerous’ Bessemer man charged with murder, on the run in slaying of Midfield mother of 2

A Bessemer man sought in the weekend shooting death of a Midfield mother of two has now been identified and charged in the killing.

George Eric Peppins, a 47-year-old convicted sex offender, is charged with murder in the Saturday slaying of 33-year-old Koreyanta “Koko” Davis.

Peppins remains on the run, said Midfield police Sgt. Michael Jeffries, and should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police released Peppins’ photo earlier this week and received multiple tips from the community identifying him.

Midfield police received a 911 call at 9:51 p.m. Saturday reporting a physical altercation in the 500 block of Henson Street.

Shortly after arriving on the scene, officers found Davis lying near the edge of the street. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Jeffries said Davis and another woman were involved in a physical altercation. While they were fighting, he said, Peppins pulled a gun and shot Davis.

Davis’s best friend, Amber Nashay, said Davis leaves behind two young sons who “loved their mama to pieces.”

“Who didn’t know Koko?’’ Nashay said. “She was the energy. She was loved by everybody.”

“Koko leaves memories with a lot of people,’’ she said. “This one hurts for sure.”

“Koko was one of the most outgoing and caring people anyone could meet,’’ said Carlos Chaverst Jr., executive director of the Carlos Chaverst Foundation. “Koko always looked after others even while dealing with her own issues.”

“Everyone knew Koko and she was known to always make other people smile,’’ Chaverst said. “I know she’s smiling down on us now knowing she’s in a better place than this wicked world.”

Anyone with information on Peppins’ whereabouts is asked to call 911 immediately. Police caution he should not be approached.

Tipsters can also call Jeffries at 205-745-3554 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
