‘Welcome mat’ to Dauphin Island closing Friday for repairs, upgrades

A Mobile County public fishing pier will close Friday for the first of two brief shutdowns.

According to information provided by the county, the shutdowns of Cedar Point Pier will allow for a temporary restroom structure to be replaced with a permanent one. Other repairs also will be made.

The park, at 18250 Dauphin Island Parkway, will close at 6 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, and reopen at 6 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6. It will then close again at 6 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, and reopen at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13.

The fishing pier and surrounding property was purchased by the county in 2021 after decades of ownership by the family of Roland “Mac” McRae, who purchased and rebuilt it after Hurricane Frederic. After some renovations, it reopened to the public in April 2022. At the time, county officials said they planned to replace a restroom trailer with a permanent facility.

Because of its location at the tip of the mainland, where Alabama 193 approaches the Dauphin Island Bridge, the pier has been described as a “welcome mat” to the island.
