A child who died Monday morning after being found in a laundry hamper was the daughter of a Trussville City Schools teacher.

A statement issued by the school Monday night said the 5-year-old girl, whose name has not yet been released, was a “precious, smart, and inquisitive child whose heartbreaking loss has affected us all.”

Trussville police Lt. Clint Riner said officers responded at 6:39 a.m. to a residence. They have not yet disclosed the location but said it was in the Hawk Ridge subdivision.

The girl – a kindergartner – was found unresponsive inside a laundry hamper. She was taken to St. Vincent’s East by Trussville Fire and Rescue, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities said they don’t yet know how long the child had been in the hamper. The death appears to be accidental, according to police.

“This is a very sad and tragic event, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family,’’ the school system’s statement read. “We are arranging to have counselors on-site for our students and staff in the wake of this tragedy.”

“We are more than a school system in Trussville, we are a family,’’ according to the statement. “Something like this touches us all, and we will provide support to the family in the coming days and weeks as they deal with this tragic loss.”
