Hazel Green girls basketball ties AHSAA record for consecutive wins
The Hazel Green girls’ basketball team is one victory away from owning a piece of Alabama High School Athletic Association history all to themselves after beating Fairfield 92-20 on the road Friday night.
The five-time defending Class 6A state champions have won 86 consecutive basketball games, tying Lauderdale County’s steak of 86 straight games from 2013-15, and are one win away from holding the top spot in AHSAA play for both girls’ and boys’ teams.
“We don’t even talk about the streak,” Hazel Green coach Tim Miller said. “We have yet to talk about it. It’s something that is a great honor but only two girls on this team have been here all three years, Leah Brooks and Sydney Steward. The rest of these girls don’t know because they were not a part of it. It really doesn’t matter to us, we go on to the next practice and the next game.”
Lauderdale County won five consecutive state titles between 2012 and 2016, 13 state titles overall, and Hazel Green and Pisgah could break that record if either team wins a championship this season.
The longest winning streak for a boys’ program recognized by the AHSAA, according to the official website, is 73 games by A.G. Parrish of Selma from 1943-1947. Tuscaloosa Academy holds the high-school consecutive game win streak record with 100, a three-year streak that ended in December 1983.
Hazel Green will face Riverdale (Tenn.) at home on Saturday with an opportunity to set a new AHSAA record of 87 consecutive victories. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
The last time Hazel Green lost a game was on Dec. 19, 2020, when Ellsworth (Tenn.) defeated the Trojans 50-47, and the last in-state team to beat the Trojans was Ramsay, which beat Hazel Green twice, Jan. 13 and Jan. 25, during the 2019-20 season.
The national girls’ record for consecutive wins, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations, is 218 wins. Baskin, La., earned the record from 1947-1953 under Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame coach Edna Tarbutton. Baskin won nine state titles under Tarbutton, eight in a row.
Miller, now in his 10th season at Hazel Green, has won nine AHSAA state titles at three different schools and is now 713-98 overall and 327-27 with the Trojans. Miller’s first title came in 2006 at Jeff Davis in Montgomery and he won three championships coaching at Bob Jones in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
Leah Brooks, who has started every game of the winning streak, finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks in a little more than two periods of play.
“It’s surely great, getting in there and showing our hard work,” Brooks said. “Everybody works hard every day and we’re trying to win state again.”
Jaden Toney led the Trojans with 17 points, followed by Addison Cantrell with 13 points and Zyriah Price with 12 points. Amiya Redus and Kristen Johnson each had 8 points and Ashlyn Elliot, Brett Douglas and Ashley King all had 4 points.
Tajaee Young led Fairfield with 12 points. Da’miya Fox, Paris Thompson, Carlisha Scroggins and Khyriana Mallory had 4 points each.
The Trojans clinched the Area 16 regular-season title on Monday, won their 85th straight game on Wednesday and improved to 27-0 on the season with the win over Fairfield. Hazel Green will host the area tournament at a date and time to be determined. Girls’ area tournaments are scheduled to be held Feb. 4-10.
“Let’s play and get it over with,” Brooks said. “Everything is political, and goes a certain way, we just play and get to where we want to go. It’s very exciting and humbling at the same time.”
