Mike Shula makes return to Bryant-Denny Stadium as visiting team coach
Mike Shula made his return to Bryant-Denny Stadium in a working capacity for the first time in 18 years on Saturday.
Shula, Alabama’s starting quarterback from 1984-86 and its head coach from 2003-06, is now a senior offensive assistant at South Carolina. The Gamecocks and Crimson Tide met on Saturday in Tuscaloosa.
Here’s video of Shula chatting with someone who appears to be an NFL scout on the field during pre-game warmups:
Shula went 26-23 in four seasons at Alabama, his alma mater. He was fired after the 2006 Iron Bowl and replaced by Nick Saban.
Outside of his four years at Alabama, the 59-year-old Shula had spent the entirety of his coaching career before this year as an assistant in the NFL. He coached in the league from 1988-2002 and 2007-23, including stints as offensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers (whom he helped to a Super Bowl) and New York Giants.
Shula declined an interview request from AL.com through the South Carolina athletics department earlier this week. He has rarely spoken publicly about his time at Alabama since he was fired 18 years ago.
