Bengals to play without former Alabama tackle again

The Cincinnati Bengals will play another postseason game without left offensive tackle Jonah Williams on Sunday. The former Alabama All-American won’t play when the Bengals take on the Kansas City Chiefs for a spot in Super Bowl LVII.

Williams sustained a dislocated kneecap in Cincinnati’s 24-17 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Jan. 15 in the first round of the NFL playoffs. He has not practiced since, and he missed Sunday’s 27-10 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the second round on Sunday.

While Bengals coach Zac Taylor has referred to Williams as day-to-day this week after calling him week-to-week last week, the Cincinnati injury report on Friday showed Williams’ status as “out” for the game against Kansas City.

Williams was the third starting offensive lineman to go down in a four-game span. Right tackle La’el Collins sustained a knee injury on Dec. 24, and right guard Alex Cappa suffered an ankle injury on Jan. 8.

Collins won’t play again this season. Cappa hasn’t played since his injury and won’t be back for Sunday’s game.

Hakeem Adeniji went in at right tackle, Max Scharping came in at right guard and Jackson Carman stepped in for Williams.

In the victory over Buffalo, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was sacked once and hit three times.

“I feel good,” Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor said about the Bengals’ offensive line. “They’ve prepared all season. (Offensive-line coach) Frank (Pollack)’s done a good job making sure everybody stays ready. He continues to do that with everybody that’s on the roster there. It’s for times like these when you’re going to have to pull from your depth, and, so far, those guys have stepped up to the challenge.”

Super Bowl LVII kicks off on Feb. 12 – two weeks after the AFC Championship Game.

Taylor said the Bengals would “cross that bridge when we get to it” when asked if he thought Williams would be back by the NFL championship game if Cincinnati defeated Kansas City.

In his third season as a starter, Williams served as Cincinnati’s left tackle for all but six snaps during the 2022 regular season.

The Bengals and Chiefs will square off at 5:30 p.m. CST Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. CBS will televise the game.
