Man shot dead in Birmingham’s second homicide of the day

A man was fatally shot outside his Ensley home Friday night.

The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. in the 1800 block of 31st Street in the Ensley Highlands community.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said West Precinct officers were dispatched to the neighborhood on a report of a person down. When they arrived, the found the victim unresponsive in front of a home there.

He was pronounced dead by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Wade said the victim had just exited his home to speak with another family member. That’s when the unidentified suspect pulled up to the house in a vehicle.

“The victim and the suspect exchanged words,’’ Wade said. “The suspect shot the victim and left the scene.”

No arrests have been made. It was not immediately clear if the suspect and the victim knew each other.

The deadly shooting was the city’s second homicide Friday.

Just before 12:30 p.m., another man was fatally shot in the in the 8300 block of Fourth Avenue North in East Lake. That killing also involved a verbal dispute that escalated into gunfire.

Friday night’s slaying marked the city’s 130th homicide this year. Of those, nine have been ruled justifiable and two others happened in previous years, but the victims died in 2024.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 164 homicides, including the 130 in Birmingham.
