Huntsville Planning Commission rejects Zierdt Road rezoning following residents’ complaints

The Huntsville Planning Commission rejected rezoning a 3.5 acre property on the west side of Zierdt Road and north of Redstone Square Drive on Tuesday following complaints by neighboring residents who do not want commercial development near their homes.

The owners of the property sought to rezone their land from a residential district to a neighborhood commercial district that could have allowed businesses that would cater to residents who lived nearby.

Zierdt Road resident Lonnie Stanford said commercial development of the property could cause visibility concerns. A veteran, he said the additional traffic could set off “triggers” for his struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder.

“The very reason I moved into that area was because of the zoning restrictions for residential,” he said.

“We’re concerned about the amount of traffic,” Zierdt Road resident Betty Batts said. “The lanes have been doubled and cars are coming as if they are a main highway. We have incidents where we are trying to pull out of our driveway, and it’s very difficult. We have two lane traffic coming both ways.”

City planner Lady Kassama said the rezoning would allow businesses such as hair salons, physician offices and small convenience stores. She said developers planned to build an office building on the property.
