Fairhope 59, Daphne 45: McRae Taul, Andrew Taylor and Spence Sims all scored in double figures Tuesday night as the No. 5 Pirates won their 16th straight game.

Fairhope is now 24-1 overall. The only loss came on Dec. 2 at home against St. Paul’s.

Taul, a 6-foot-6 junior, finished with 15 points on Tuesday to lead the way. Junior guard Spence Sims followed with 13 and Andrew Taylor had 12.

“In all honesty, I had no idea this team would be 24-1,” Fairhope coach Solomon Johnson said. “The biggest difference from last year to this year is that these kids play together. They do everything together. It’s such a joy to be around a team that wants to work every single day.”

Fairhope led 27-17 at the half and 40-23 entering the fourth quarter. The lead ballooned to as many as 20, 47-27, on a Sims’ 3-pointer early in the final quarter.

Donavan Wilson scored 9 of his 11 points in the final quarter to keep Daphne in the game.

“I think we are right there,” Daphne second-year coach Reed Hotard said of his team’s progress this year. “We’ve had so many tight losses this year. I think we’ve had six losses by 6 or fewer points or in overtime. This was a game where if things go a little bit differently in the first half maybe the result is different. It kind of got away from us in the third quarter, but I still like where we are. I think we are peaking at the right time.”

Fairhope finishes the regular season at Gulf Breeze, Fla., on Tuesday. Daphne (14-12) hosts Davidson on Wednesday in its regular season finale.

Huntsville plays archrival No. 6 Grissom (21-6, 4-1) on Friday at home. A Huntsville win clinches the regular-season area title. A Grissom win and Huntsville win over Sparkman on Tuesday would result in a tie at the top and leave a coin flip to decide the area tournament host.

Faith Academy 53, St. Paul’s 44: Davon Carter’s 30 points lifted Faith Academy to a win over host St. Paul’s in a crucial Area 2 game on Thursday night.

LJ Holifield added 15 points as the Rams improved to 15-10 overall and 4-4 in area play.

“He’s playing better and better every game,” Faith head coach Chad Applin said of Carter. “I think that 30 points is a career high, and I couldn’t be happier for him. He’s emerging as a leader; he shot the ball well and drove to the basket, played great defense and played with a lot of passion.

“He has really stepped up his game for the past two weeks and it’s really showing and helping us as a team. He needs to be that guy, and he’s doing a great job.”

Joe Brown led St. Paul’s (13-10, 4-3) with 20 points, including three 3-pointers in the second half.

“They (Faith) brought a lot of pressure,” said Saints head coach Brandon Garrett. “Mentally, it got in our heads, and we couldn’t get the confidence enough to get into the spots we wanted. Faith did a good job of that, putting us into uncomfortable positions and situations.”

Faith led by as many as 11 in the first period before a Brown jumper and a Christian Williams 3-pointer shrunk the lead to 16-10. In the second period, the Saints continued chipping away at the lead and pulled to within 24-23 before the Rams pulled back ahead with a Carter basket and a pair of Holifield free throws.

Brown’s free throw after being fouled on a successful layup pulled St. Paul’s to within 2 and another Brown free throw made it 28-27. But a Rob Franks 3-pointer from nearly 60 feet away at the buzzer put Faith up 31-27 going into the locker room.

“We got off to a great start,” Applin said. “We kind of jumped out on them early; we made a few silly plays that kind of helped them (St. Paul’s) to cut it to 6. I thought we outplayed them to be up by 10-12 points, but St Paul’s has been playing really good basketball and for us to come in and get a win on their home court is huge.”

The third period featured a game of runs. The Rams went up by 6 early in the third period before Brown hit back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game. But Faith went on a 9-0 run to go up 42-33 before Chris Bracy made a 3-pointer and Cade Horton followed up with another 3 with 6.2 seconds left in the quarter to pull the Saints to within 42-39.

But in the fourth period, Carter basically took control of the game, sparking a 9-2 run to stretch the lead to 50-41. Brown’s 3-pointer — his third of the game — cut the lead to 6 with 2:14 left in the game, but a Carter basket and free throw after being fouled accounted for the final margin.

“We made some runs, but we just couldn’t get a final push and make a solid run,” said Garrett.

“This game was just a physical gut check kind of game where you don’t want to settle for a lot of 3s; you just have to be physical and get to the rim,” Applin said. “You have to get within 2 feet and make plays. Our defense carried us the whole night.”

Both teams are in action on Tuesday, with Faith hosting UMS-Wright and St. Paul’s on the road against Mary G. Montgomery.

Faith Academy 38, St. Paul’s 33: Faith Academy’s Kellyn Hunter scored 14 points and Nancy McKenzie added 11 – including a crucial basket late in the game to help ensure the win over host St. Paul’s in Area 2 action Thursday night.

The Rams improved to 11-9 overall and 4-3 in area play.

“It was a low-scoring game and it wasn’t really a good game for either team because both teams missed shots they normally make,” said Faith head coach Martha Gore-Algernon. “It wasn’t a high-scoring game, but you’ve got to keep playing and our young ladies worked hard and stayed focused even if they didn’t do what I asked them to do at times; but they played hard and as long as you play hard, you give yourself a chance to win.”

Ella Vallas led St. Paul’s with 17 points, but the Saints did not have too much offensive punch to help her as they dropped to 12-11 overall and 4-3 in the area.

“Obviously, it didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to turn out,” said St. Paul’s head coach Amanda Niehoff. “It was a low-scoring game; typically, most of our games are low scoring because we’re very defensive-minded. The thing we struggled with was perimeter pressure. I don’t think we got enough shots. Credit to my defense for staying out in front of Kellyn Hunter for most of the night, but we couldn’t protect the basketball and get enough good looks at the rim.”

Hunter’s basket early in the fourth period pulled the Rams to within two at 29-27. The game was tied three times as both teams battled to get an advantage. With 1:27 left in the game, Ja’Terralyn Hamilton hit a jumper that gave the Rams the lead for good.

Hamilton was fouled, and made the one free throw to push the lead to 3, and McKenzie’s basket with 40 seconds left in the game proved to be the final margin.

“I just think our pressure finally was effective in the last three or four minutes,” said Gore-Algernon. “We pressured on and off throughout the game, but I think the pressure of keeping it on full court made the difference.”

“I think we missed a shot around the goal we should’ve made, and that fueled the transition for a basket for them,” Niehoff said. “Two of my players who are responsible for handling the ball on the floor are freshmen and sophomores, so they’ve got a lot of room to improve. Faith did what it needed to do defensively to throw us off our game.”

St. Paul’s led 13-11 at the end of the first period, but the Rams battled back in the second and tied the game 15-all with 4:20 left before intermission. Vallas hit three straight baskets to give the Saints a 6-point lead before Ferrin Westry nailed a free throw to pull Faith to within 21-16.

Margaret Wilson’s basket early in the third period gave St. Paul’s a 7-point lead, but the Rams stayed close and pulled to within 2 before a Vallas jumper just before the buzzer put the Saints up 29-25, setting up the deciding final period.

“I told our team we needed to execute our sets better,” said Gore-Algernon. “We were trying to force shots and I don’t think we did a good job in the second half, but we kept playing hard defensively.”

Faith Academy hosts Bayside Academy on Thursday while St. Paul’s travels to play Mary G. Montgomery on Tuesday.
