Birmingham to host NCAA men’s basketball tournament games in 2028

Birmingham will host NCAA men’s basketball tournament first- and second-round games in 2028, it was announced Wednesday.

The games — involving eight teams — will take place at Legacy Arena over the course of three days in March. Birmingham last hosted NCAA tournament games in 2023, when both Alabama and Auburn began their postseason action in the Magic City.

Other NCAA championship events set for the state of Alabama that were announced by the NCAA on Wednesday:

• Auburn will host a 2025 Division I men’s golf regional tournament at the Auburn University Club, as well as a 2028 NCAA gymnastics regional meet at Neville Arena.

• Gulf Shores will host the National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship tournament in both 2027 and 2028. The city hosted the same event from 2016-24, but it will move to Huntington Beach, Calif., for 2025 and 2026.

• John Hunt Park in Huntsville will host a 2026 NCAA Division II cross country regional and the 2027 Division II finals. The park will also host a 2027 NCAA Division I cross country regional.

• Huntsville’s Joe Davis Stadium will host the 2027 Division II men’s and women’s soccer finals.

• The 2027 NCAA Division II indoor track and field finals will take place at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
