Hush shooting: National stats place Birmingham mass shooting near top of a grim list

As police still hunt for the killers in the deadly mass shooting outside the Hush lounge, a national database puts the Birmingham incident near the top of a sobering list: the most people killed and wounded in a single shooting.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, of the 411 mass shootings so far this year in the United States, the shooting at Hush in which 21 people were killed or injured, ties for the third most victims in a single incident. Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr., 26, Anitra Holloman, 21, Tahj Booker, 27, and Carlos McCain, 27 were killed in the shooting in Five Points on Sept. 21.

“Mass Shootings are, for the most part an American phenomenon,” the GVA website says, adding that mass shootings are defined by having a “minimum of four victims shot, either injured or killed, not including any shooter who may also have been killed or injured in the incident.”
